Stayin Alive in Joburg

I am pleased to announce that the movie “Stayin Alive in Joburg” has just been finished and is premiering in Amsterdam on the 3rd of September 2009. I am sad for not making it to Amsterdam for the premiere – Would be cool to be there during summer…
Stayin Alive in Joburg, is a documentary made by Rob Shroeder, and follows the lives of yours truly and my good friend Zack Sejephala from Bertrams. The movie looks at the issues of migration, police enforcement, informailty, urban development and the upcoming 2010 world cup.
Watch this space for more….

Please remember this is a just a slice from the streets Joburg and the movie does focus on the problems only. Keep in the back of you mind that there is much good work happening too. Joburg is not all about crime and fear. As it happens, I live in Cape Town now, and I believe that petty crime is far worse here. Joburg gets a bad rap, and its just unwarranted. As for the music, the main soundtrack Stayin Alive, is performed by the African Noise Foundation, all other music was recorded live in the streets. Thanks for your support!

Excellent film. I was in Jo'burg 35years ago and the extent of the changes is graphically portrayed within the documentary. Of immediate concern is the news reaching the UK this week that the SA government is not only forcibly evicting people from their homes and planning demolition in areas of Bertrams but also proposes compulsory relocation for thousands within the inner cities to further sanitise areas in and around the stadia. If half of what we hear is true then the cost in human terms of staging this tournament will be enormous. Both FIFA and the SA Government were unforgiveably misguided in thinking that the venue for 2010 was appropriate.
